How to save a screenshot on Windows

Capture a selected area and save the screenshot as an image file in a location you can easily find later.

Save the selected region

  1. Start a capture and drag over the area you need.
  2. Choose the save button from the toolbar.
  3. Select a folder and descriptive filename.
  4. Confirm the image format and save.

PNG or JPEG?

PNG is usually best for interfaces, error messages and text because it preserves sharp edges. JPEG can be smaller for photographs but may blur small text. Use a meaningful name such as invoice-error-2026-08-12.png instead of leaving many files with generic names.

Keep captures organized

Create folders for projects, dates or customers. Before archiving or sending a screenshot, check it for personal data, credentials, private messages and recovery codes.
